Can you combine Keukenhof and Noordwijk Beach in one day?
Absolutely. Noordwijk is one of the most natural coastal additions to a Keukenhof day. Visit the gardens first, continue through the flower-growing countryside and finish at the North Sea for a beach walk, drinks, dinner or sunset. By car, the drive from Keukenhof to central Noordwijk aan Zee is roughly 20 minutes in normal traffic.
Why visit Noordwijk Beach?
Noordwijk gives you a completely different landscape only a short distance from Keukenhof. Around Lisse you see flower gardens, bulb fields and small villages. Continue west and the scenery changes into dunes, sand and the open North Sea.
The Noordwijk coastline stretches for approximately 13 kilometres. Central Noordwijk aan Zee feels like a classic Dutch seaside resort with boulevards, hotels, shops, restaurants and beach clubs. Farther north, the coast becomes quieter and more natural around Duindamseslag and Langevelderslag.
This variety is what makes Noordwijk useful for so many visitors. You can come for a one-hour walk, spend an afternoon with children, cycle through the dunes, have dinner beside the beach or simply watch the sun disappear over the North Sea.
How far is Noordwijk Beach from Keukenhof?
Noordwijk aan Zee lies immediately west of the Bollenstreek. From Keukenhof in Lisse, allow approximately 20 minutes by car in normal conditions. The exact travel time depends on the beach area, your parking choice and traffic.
During the Keukenhof season, the roads around Lisse can become busy. Sunny weekends, public holidays and the weekend of the flower parade can create additional traffic towards both Keukenhof and the coast. Do not plan the journey too tightly.
Our advice: visit Keukenhof earlier in the day and drive to Noordwijk later in the afternoon. You avoid trying to rush between attractions and can use the beach as a relaxed end to your spring day.
Driving from Keukenhof to Noordwijk Beach
For visitors with a car, Noordwijk is one of the simplest beaches to add to Keukenhof. Central Noordwijk aan Zee is the best first choice if you want restaurants, a boulevard and multiple beach entrances within walking distance.
Keukenhof → Noordwijk aan Zee
Drive west from Lisse through the Bollenstreek towards Noordwijk. Once near the coast, choose a parking area close to the boulevard rather than driving from beach entrance to beach entrance.
Drive from Keukenhof with Google Maps →Keukenhof → Langevelderslag
If you prefer dunes, a spacious parking area and a quieter family beach, continue north to Langevelderslag instead of central Noordwijk.
Read the complete Langevelderslag guide →Which part of Noordwijk Beach is best?
There is no single “Noordwijk Beach” experience. The coast changes considerably from the lively boulevard to the quieter northern dune beaches. Choosing the right section before you drive there can save time.
Noordwijk aan Zee – main beach
Choose the central beach around Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard, Vuurtorenplein and Parallel Boulevard if you want the easiest combination of beach, restaurants, shops, hotels and the lighthouse.
Koningin Astrid Boulevard
The southern boulevard is a good choice for visitors who want direct beach access and beach-club dining. It is also attractive later in the day when the sun is setting over the North Sea.
Duindamseslag
North of the main resort, Duindamseslag feels much more natural. You reach the beach through the dunes and leave most of the town atmosphere behind.
Langevelderslag
Farther north, Langevelderslag combines a dune-backed beach with parking, restaurants, Speelzandt and accessible beach facilities.
Parking at Noordwijk Beach
Parking is one of the most important things to plan before you arrive. Around central Noordwijk aan Zee, the beach, boulevards and shopping areas, paid parking generally applies seven days a week. Tariffs vary by parking zone and can change, so always check the signs or parking machine when you arrive.
Useful central parking areas include Wantveld and parking locations around the boulevards. Wantveld is particularly practical if you want to explore the main beach and northern side of central Noordwijk on foot.
Do not assume one parking ticket is valid throughout Noordwijk. Parking rules can differ by zone. The easiest approach is usually to choose your beach area first, park once and explore that area on foot.
Busy-day tip: sunny weekends can fill the most convenient parking locations quickly. Arriving earlier in the day or later in the afternoon is usually more relaxed than arriving around lunchtime.
Beach Shuttle in summer
Noordwijk has operated a seasonal Beach Shuttle on selected busy summer days, allowing visitors to park away from the immediate coastline and continue towards the beach by shuttle. Because the operating dates and conditions can change each year, always check the current summer information before planning your trip around the shuttle.
During the Keukenhof season in March, April and early May, you should normally plan on regular parking rather than depending on a summer beach shuttle.
Restaurants and beach clubs in Noordwijk
One of Noordwijk's biggest advantages is the amount of food and drink available directly beside the coast. You can have coffee in the morning, lunch overlooking the sand, drinks after a beach walk or a full dinner while watching the sunset.
The central coastline has a wide choice of beach clubs and restaurants, while the boulevards and streets behind the beach add many more cafés and dining options. The exact selection and opening hours vary by season and weather.
Coffee with a sea view
Several beach pavilions open during the day for coffee, breakfast or lunch. In spring, sheltered terraces are especially pleasant when the sea breeze is cool.
Drinks on the beach
A drink after Keukenhof is an easy way to slow down before deciding whether you want to stay for dinner or sunset.
Dinner by the North Sea
For sunny weekends and holiday periods, reserve a table if a specific beach restaurant is important to you. Beach restaurants can become busy quickly when the weather is good.
Opening hours: beach pavilion schedules can change by season and weather. Always check the current restaurant information if you are travelling specifically for a meal.
Walking on Noordwijk Beach
You do not need warm summer weather to enjoy Noordwijk. The wide beach is ideal for walking throughout the year. Spring is especially attractive because you can combine a coastal walk with the flower fields and Keukenhof on the same day.
Walk south from the main resort for long views along the coast, or head north for increasingly quiet beach and dune scenery. If the wind is strong, the dunes can provide a different walking experience away from the open shoreline.
Dunes and Hollandse Duinen National Park
Behind the beach is an extensive dune landscape. Noordwijk forms part of the wider Hollandse Duinen coastal region, where beaches, dunes, forests and estates create excellent walking and cycling possibilities.
For international visitors, the contrast is striking: within one day you can move from Keukenhof's designed gardens to commercial bulb fields, then into dunes and finally onto a wide North Sea beach.
Cycling from the tulip fields to the beach
Noordwijk is a particularly good cycling destination in spring. The Bollenstreek between Lisse, Noordwijkerhout and Noordwijk is filled with flower-growing areas, while the dunes provide a completely different landscape near the coast.
If you are already planning to cycle through the tulip region, consider extending the ride towards Noordwijk rather than returning by the same route. See our cycling routes through the tulip fields for more ideas.
Can you swim at Noordwijk Beach?
Yes. Swimming is popular during warm weather, but the North Sea is not a swimming pool. Wind, waves, tides and currents can change quickly, and the water is often cold during the Keukenhof season.
Always follow the warning flags and instructions from lifeguards. Stay close to shore in uncertain conditions and supervise children continuously. If a red warning flag is flying, do not treat the water as safe for casual swimming.
Spring visitors: in March, April and early May, a beach walk is usually much more realistic than a long swim. Even on sunny days the sea can still be very cold.
Noordwijk Beach with children
Noordwijk is a good choice for families because the main beach combines open sand with food, toilets and other facilities nearby. Children have space to build sandcastles, collect shells and play after several hours of walking through Keukenhof.
Families wanting a quieter beach and extra play facilities can also consider Langevelderslag. The nearby Speelzandt nature playground makes that northern beach especially interesting for children.
Regardless of the beach section, always keep young children close near the water. North Sea currents can be stronger than they appear.
Accessible beach options
Noordwijk has several initiatives designed to make the coast more accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. At selected locations, special beach wheelchairs can help visitors cross soft sand more easily.
For a particularly accessible beach experience, the wider Noordwijk coast around Langevelderslag offers additional options. These include WaterWheels, an electric Rolrups beach wheelchair and the Strandrups Noordwijk, a specially designed vehicle for guided trips over the beach.
If accessibility is essential for your visit, reserve specialist equipment in advance where required and check the current departure point and availability before travelling.
Dogs on Noordwijk Beach
Noordwijk is popular with dog owners, but the rules depend on the season and beach section. From 1 June through 31 August, dogs are not permitted on the main beach between beach exits 1 and 21.
There is a dedicated dog beach south of beach exit 1 in the direction of Katwijk where dogs are welcome throughout the year. Outside the main summer restriction period, dogs have considerably more freedom on much of the Noordwijk coastline.
Nature sections can have stricter rules, including areas where dogs must remain on a lead. Always check the signs at the beach entrance because local rules can differ from one stretch of coast to another.
Water sports at Noordwijk
Depending on weather and sea conditions, the Noordwijk coast is used for surfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and other water sports. Designated water-sports zones help separate activities from normal swimming areas.
If you are swimming, pay attention to local flags and signs and do not enter a marked water-sports area. If you want to book an activity, check availability in advance because lessons and rental can depend heavily on wind and sea conditions.
Noordwijk Lighthouse
The white lighthouse is one of the most recognisable landmarks of Noordwijk aan Zee and a useful orientation point around the northern end of the central boulevard. Even if you do not visit the lighthouse itself, it makes an attractive stop during a walk between the beach and town.
The current lighthouse dates from the early twentieth century and reflects Noordwijk's long connection with the North Sea.

Shopping and the centre of Noordwijk aan Zee
The beach is only part of the experience. Behind the boulevard, the centre of Noordwijk aan Zee has shops, cafés, restaurants and hotels. This makes central Noordwijk a useful choice when the weather is changeable: you can walk on the beach, have lunch and continue into town without needing to move your car.
Noordwijk Beach in spring
Spring is the most relevant season for Keukenhof visitors. March, April and early May are often too cool for a traditional beach day, but excellent for walking, cycling and combining sea air with the tulip fields.
Bring layers and a wind-resistant jacket. The temperature beside the North Sea can feel much cooler than it does among the sheltered gardens at Keukenhof.
Noordwijk Beach in summer
Summer is the busiest beach season. On warm sunny days, visitors arrive from across the Netherlands and parking fills quickly. If you want a full beach day, arriving in the morning is generally easier than arriving around lunchtime.
Summer is also the period when seasonal dog restrictions and beach-shuttle arrangements are most relevant.
Noordwijk Beach in autumn and winter
Autumn and winter can be excellent for long walks. The coast is quieter, the light can be beautiful and several year-round hospitality venues allow you to combine a cold beach walk with something warm to eat or drink.
Stormy weather can be impressive but should be treated with caution. Stay away from rough water and follow any local safety instructions.
Sunset at Noordwijk Beach
Noordwijk faces west across the North Sea, making sunset one of the highlights of an evening visit. On a clear day, walk towards the water before sunset or choose a beach restaurant with an open sea view.
For Keukenhof visitors, this is another reason to visit the gardens first and the coast afterwards. Your day naturally moves from flowers in daylight to dinner and sunset by the sea.
Noordwijk Beach or Zandvoort?
Noordwijk
Choose Noordwijk if your day revolves around Keukenhof, tulip fields and the Bollenstreek. The coast is much closer to the flower region and easy to add by car.
Zandvoort
Choose Zandvoort if you are travelling directly from Amsterdam by train or want a larger seaside town with a railway station right beside the coast.
Both beaches are attractive, but for a visitor already standing at Keukenhof, Noordwijk is normally the more logical coastal choice.
Noordwijk Beach or Langevelderslag?
Noordwijk aan Zee
Choose central Noordwijk for boulevards, restaurants, shops, hotels and the feeling of a classic Dutch beach town.
Langevelderslag
Choose Langevelderslag if you prefer nature, a quieter beach, a large parking area and family or accessibility facilities close together.
How much time do you need at Noordwijk Beach?
For a quick beach walk and drink, allow around 1.5–2 hours. If you also want lunch or dinner, shopping, a dune walk or time to watch sunset, allow at least 3–4 hours.
