What does “Keukenhof tulpen” mean?

Tulp is the Dutch word for one tulip and tulpen means tulips. The phrase “Keukenhof tulpen” is therefore a common way to search for the tulip displays at Keukenhof.

Why are tulips so closely connected with the Netherlands?

The Netherlands became one of the world's major centres for flower-bulb cultivation and trade. The Bollenstreek around Lisse remains one of the best-known bulb-growing regions, and Keukenhof was created to showcase the spring-flowering bulb industry.

How many tulpen are planted at Keukenhof?

Keukenhof plants around 7 million spring bulbs in total each year. The planting includes more than 1,600 bulb varieties, with roughly 800 varieties of tulips.

Are all the flowers at Keukenhof tulips?

No. Tulips are the stars of the park, but visitors also see hyacinths, narcissi, crocuses, muscari and many other spring flowers. This is important early in the season, when some tulip varieties have not yet reached peak bloom.

Where can you see tulips outside Keukenhof?

The surrounding Bollenstreek contains commercial flower fields, but these are working farms. Visitors should stay on public roads and only enter fields or photo gardens when the grower clearly allows it.
